When we hear the term Morrocan slippers, our mind conjures images of flat shoes, like slippers, open at the heel and with a pointed toe. It is also likely that images of a Bedouin wearing the shoes in an oriental pattern come to mind, right? Well, you’re thinking along the right lines, but their history is long and this design also has very solid roots in Europe.
If we look at the French and Spanish names for the Morrocan slipper, we find babouche, in French, and babucha in Spanish. Here, we can see a strong link to their Arabic roots, where they are known as babush, and pāpuš in Persian. In fact, the latter makes a direct reference to the style, as pā means foot, and puš means cover.
The slipper’s story began life in the Persian Empire and the Eastern Mediterranean, where it was extremely popular.
During the XVII century, the European elite, especially in France, took a great liking to oriental styles. French courtiers fell in love with the exotic charm of Morrocan slippers: as well as their attractive design, they turned out to be a very comfortable shoe with soft soles and an air of nonchalance about them, perfect for their easy and leisurely lifestyle.
Morrocan slippers have remained a leading shoe design for comfortable footwear and a very traditional style right up to today. In fact, well known figures, both from the nobility and showbusiness, continued to wear them with pride. Actually, they were so popular, that in 2016, Vogue magazine featured them as a ‘must-have’ for any wardrobe.
